Who we are and What we do
VVA is a non-profit, Veterans Service Organization. Programs and services are funded by
members’ dues and public donations.
Chapter 388 is involved in numerous Veteran programs in Northern Nevada. The chapter
sponsored and financed the Nevada Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Mills Park. On
Veterans Day 2004, the chapter added a stone bench honoring Women Veterans.
The yearly POW/MIA ceremony on the Capital complex is organized by the chapter.
In 2010, the chapter was recognized for its long standing financial support of jobless
veterans by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
The chapter recently helped organize the highly successful 2011 National Vietnam
Veterans of America Convention in Reno.
In a more recent project endorsed by the National Viet Nam Veterans Organization, we
are reaching out to help America’s newest veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
However, we are most proud of are activities that directly help veterans in the area. The
chapter recently worked with other service organizations at the Homeless Connect in
Carson City, providing warm clothing to veterans in need. The chapter provides bus
passes (JAC) for under employed and homeless veterans. We also supplement the DAV
ride program, which transport local veterans to the VA hospital in Reno. The chapter
provides gift cards and gas vouchers to needy area veterans.
The chapter works with local social service organizations, such as Friends in Service
Helping (FISH). We fund a separate veterans section in the food closet. In addition, we
often provide direct support to needy veterans in the area by sponsoring several veteran
families at Christmas and our Chaplain Program visits hospitalized veterans in the area.
The chapter has provided financial support to the Veterans Home in Las Vegas. We have
provided a stone marker for the Veterans Guest House in Reno and helped them with their
fundraising efforts.
As an organization the VVA pledge reflects that:
“Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another”
